Dr. Tanesha Lawrence, MD was born in Kingston, Jamaica where she remained until the age of 4. Leaving Jamaica she eventually migrated with family to the United States where she was raised in Orlando, Florida. She is a graduate of the University of Miami, Coral Gables, Florida where she received her B. S. degree in Biology. She later earned her MD from Temple University Medical School in 2002 and subsequently went on to complete residency training through the Residency Program of Family and Social Medicine at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, NY in 2005. Dr. Lawrence remained with Montefiore Medical Center from 2005-2010 serving as a staff physician with the NY Children’s Health Project, a subsidiary medical program of the Children’s Health Fund and Montefiore Hospital that is dedicated to providing comprehensive medical care to residents in family and domestic violence homeless shelters in NY. After working one year with a private practice group in the Queens and Brooklyn area, she has been providing urgent/walk-in medical care services through a clinic in New York City, NY since late 2011.
As a trained family physician and a strong proponent of preventative medicine, Dr. Lawrence has experience with providing primary medical care to patients that span the entire age spectrum from infancy through geriatrics. It was in 2011 that the Lord began to speak to Dr. Lawrence about the ministry of missions. While first reading the book "The Purpose Driven Life" by Rick Warren, the section describing the call to the mission field literally caused an unmistakable move in her spirit. Not shortly after during the summer of 2011, the Lord gave Dr. Lawrence a dream where she saw herself working on a mountain top with fellow church members helping other people. In questioning the dream, she did not receive an immediate answer regarding its purpose until some 6-8 months later when she signed up with her home church, Greater Allen Cathedral, to get more information regarding an upcoming missions outreach trip to Haiti scheduled for March 2012. Low and behold, as part of the mission outreach, the team would do a mountain top ministry in Carralise Haiti, climbing one of their mountains and ministering to people who lived there along the way. Astoundingly this was the answer Dr. Lawrence had been looking for: the dream from 6-8 months prior was the Lord showing her that she would be journeying to Haiti with that missionary delegation. It was through that experience and after a life-changing opportunity serving the beautiful people of Haiti, Dr. Lawrence received further clarification and revelation regarding her call to the missionary field. She has accepted that call whole-heartedly since then. But God would not stop there. To likely sharpen her effectiveness as an instrument of the gospel of Christ, the Lord would direct Dr. Lawrence to formal ministry by leading her to seminary school starting January 2014, where she is pursuing a Masters of Divinity in Theology and Missions.
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind,
to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor” (Luke 4:18-19, ESV)
